Harris Finds Alignment Through NHL Player Inclusion Coalition Role (NHLPA)

Harris recently took part in an on-ice practice with an all-girls team who are part of Hockey 4 Youth, an initiative that fosters social inclusion for new Canadian youth in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Hamilton through free hockey experiences and life skills programs.

The Massachusetts-born blueliner was joined by former NHLer Laraque, who played 695 big-league games, including 61 with the Canadiens.

“Hockey 4 Youth is a great example of who I want to be working with,” said Harris, a third-round pick of Montreal in 2018. “They are committed to helping young kids who might not have the opportunity to play the game get that chance.”

Keeping up with some of the players kept Harris, who also took part in a video call with staff members from Hockey 4 Youth, on his toes.

“There were some very good skaters out there they were flying. The whole day was a blast.”

Carter hosts teens from around world at Hockey 4 Youth event (NHL/NHLPA Player Inclusion Coalition)

Carter went on to play 674 NHL games for the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes, getting 421 points (202 goals, 219 assists).

Now a studio analyst with the “NHL on TNT,” the 49-year-old, through the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition that he co-chairs with former player and ESPN analyst P.K. Subban, organized the All-Star Overtime Clinic to provide that same chance to approximately 30 teens from the Hockey 4 Youth program.

Just after the Maple Leafs and New York Islanders concluded their morning skates at Scotiabank Arena ahead of their game Monday, the teens took to the same ice which hosted NHL All-Star Weekend.

The group, made up of immigrants from countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Somalia and Sudan, had the chance to skate, show off their skills and take part in an on-ice clinic led by Carter and former Maple Leafs defenseman Mark Fraser.

It’s not every day that you get to share an ice rink with a local hockey legend, especially when it’s your first time ever on the ice, but for a group of girls from Princess Margaret Secondary, that became a reality earlier this week.

Lacing up the skates once more, former Canuck Darcy Rota was on hand Nov. 20 to help introduce the sport he loves to a new generation of students at the North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex.

The event was the Surrey launch of Hockey 4 Youth, a Canada-wide program that aims to make hockey accessible to all.

Made possible thanks to a partnership between Surrey Schools, the Hockey 4 Youth Foundation, the City of Surrey, Surrey RCMP and the Canucks for Kids Fund, the program provides equipment, transport, ice time and professional training for those who may otherwise face barriers in accessing the sport.
