In Toronto, we are working in the high-priority neighbourhoods of St. James Town (Central) and Thorncliffe/Flemingdon (Central East). We are currently running programs at a girls program at Marc Garneau Collegiate (Thorncliffe/Flemingdon) and a mixed gender program at Jarvis Collegiate (St. James Town).
These communities have very diverse neighbourhoods with youth representing many of the 32 countries of origin including Syria, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Jamaica, Somalia, Ethiopia, India, Mexico, Cuba, and the Philippines.
The first community (Thorncliffe/Flemingdon) where we started Hockey 4 Youth has a high population of Muslim-identifying youth. In fact, we have worked with many youth from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East/Africa who would go to prayers on Friday after being dismissed from school early and then attend hockey.
